The River That Caught Fire and Lit a Path for My Research

I was twelve years old when my grandfather showed me a photograph that didn’t make sense. It was a grainy newspaper clipping from 1969, black and white, showing the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio, engulfed in flames. “A river,” he said, tapping the image with his finger, “on fire.” I stared at the picture, trying to reconcile the water I knew — the cool, clear streams where I caught tadpoles — with this image of industrial catastrophe. The science of regenerative agriculture was solid, but the economics and the psychology were lagging behind. My dissertation argued that policymakers must treat farmers as partners in the sustainability transition, not as obstacles to be regulated into compliance. It was a modest contribution, but it felt real — grounded in the voices of people who worked the land every day.

Writing that dissertation taught me that environmental research doesn’t have to be grandiose to matter. It just has to be honest.
